My Experiences Bagpiping Across Texas

In my time performing as a bagpiper in Houston and throughout Texas, I have played at weddings, funerals, birthday parties, formal dinners, and many other special occasions. Each event has been different, but the bagpipes always have a way of bringing people together and making the occasion memorable.

I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and began learning the pipes when I was ten years old. Bagpiping has taken me to many places over the years, but Texas has provided some of my most interesting and rewarding performances.

Bagpipes at Texas Weddings

I have performed at weddings in large Houston ballrooms, churches, outdoor venues, and private backyards. Some couples have a strong connection to their Scottish or Irish heritage. Others simply enjoy the music and want to give their guests an experience they may not have encountered before.

There is a great deal of flexibility in how the pipes can be used at a wedding. I may play as guests arrive, precede the bride or wedding party, perform during the ceremony, or lead the newly married couple from the venue.

The setting and timing are important. Outdoor ceremonies require attention to the weather, wind, and placement of the guests. Indoor venues require consideration of the room and its acoustics. The bagpipes are a powerful instrument, and an experienced piper should know how to use that sound effectively.

Funerals and Memorial Services

Funerals and memorial services require a more thoughtful and reserved approach. The pipes can be used as mourners arrive, during the service, beside the grave, or as the family and guests leave.

Amazing Grace is the most common request, but there are many slow airs and traditional laments that may be appropriate. I am always willing to discuss the music with the family and help them select something that reflects the person being remembered.

The timing of a funeral service may change as it progresses. The piper must pay attention to the funeral director, officiant, pallbearers, and family rather than simply following a fixed schedule. The individual needs of the family should always come first.

Birthdays and Special Events

Some of my most enjoyable performances have been birthday surprises and other informal celebrations.

I was once contacted by someone who had a last-minute idea to surprise a birthday guest with a bagpiper. I was able to attend that same day. In addition to playing several tunes, I spoke with the guests about the music and explained how the bagpipes work.

Many people have never seen the instrument up close. They are often curious about the drones, the bag, the chanter, and how the sound is produced. When the occasion allows, I enjoy answering questions and making the performance more personal.

These conversations often become as memorable as the music itself.

Every Performance Has Its Own Story

After many years of playing across Texas, I have learned that there is no single correct way to include a bagpiper in an event.

A wedding may call for an upbeat entrance. A funeral may require one carefully selected tune. A birthday celebration may work best as a complete surprise. The music, timing, and presentation should suit the people and the occasion.

What I remember most are the reactions. A bride hears the pipes before entering the ceremony. A family listens together at the end of a memorial service. A birthday guest looks up in surprise as the pipes begin.

Those moments are the reason I continue to enjoy performing.
